Proper Installation Of Roof Drip Edge

Gently lift up the shingles on the edge of the roof and locate the nails holding the existing drip edge onto.

Slip the wide flat flange of the material all the way under the first course of roof shingles as illustrated. Slightly open the hemmed edge to slide this piece over top of the installed piece on the eave. While the vertical leg should be placed 1 4 1 2 away from the fascia. Make sure the outer edge extends over the gutter.

How to install a drip edge. Secure the drip edge with roofing cement. The drip edge should be nailed centered in the top surface every 8 to 10 inches. Make sure to support the long end of the cut if you let it fall after cutting it will bend down and kink the drip edge.

Slide the corner tight to the fascia. Align the leading bottom edge of the first piece on the gable rake with the front edge of the drip edge installed on the eave. At the eaves the drip edge should be installed before the eave protection membrane. Use a flat pry bar and hammer to pry the nails out of the drip edge gently.

Apply a continuous bead of cement along the top of the drip edge then press down on the shingle. Make sure the corner is tight and that the bottom edge is tight to the fascia before nailing off the drip edge. On the gable rake install drip edge starting at the bottom and working up. The roof leg should extend a minimum of 2 back onto the roof sheathing.

Once free slide the drip edge out and discard. No cutting is needed for this piece. At the rake the drip edge is installed over the underlay. If it doesn t pull the drip edge out slightly from under the shingles.
