The color code on a torsion spring indicates whether it is a right wind or left wind spring with black indicating right wind and red indicating left wind. If one spring is broken on your torsion system we highly recommend replacing both springs. Usually you will have two springs on your door which will be color coded. If one spring is broken on your torsion system we highly recommend replacing both springs.

The right hand winding springs are wound in a clockwise direction. Most standard residential torsion systems have two torsion springs one on the right and left. Another reason to install a four spring system a second reason for installing four springs is if it needs an additional lift as a result of the door not having the correct springs.
